Traveling with cigars

Cigars ride better in the cabin than in the hold. The cargo compartment swings from hot to cold, and a few hours of that dries a cigar out or cracks the wrapper. A small travel humidor, or a sealed bag with a humidity pack, in a carry-on is the usual way. How those cases work is on Travel humidors. Do not leave the case on a car seat in the sun while you are inside the airport.

What an officer can refuse

The rules below are the public guidance shops repeat for travel in the United States. The officer at the checkpoint decides. A lighter or a cutter can be taken and not given back. Check the TSA list the day you fly, because it changes: What can I bring?

Cutters

A cigar cutter is generally allowed in a checked bag if it is sheathed or wrapped so it cannot cut the person who opens the bag. Carry-on is less certain. An officer can still refuse it. If the cutter is one you would hate to lose, put it in the checked bag, or leave it at home and buy a simple one when you arrive. A punch is small, and it is still a cutter. The same caution applies.

Lighters and fuel

A torch lighter is the one people expect to bring, and it is the one this guidance says to leave behind. Torch lighters are treated as prohibited in both a carry-on and a checked bag. A can of butane is prohibited in both as well. Do not pack the refill.

A common disposable lighter, and a Zippo-style lighter with no fuel in it, are the ones described as allowed in checked baggage. Fueled lighters in a checked bag are a narrow exception: up to two, and only inside a case the Department of Transportation has approved. An arc or plasma lighter is a different object again. When one is allowed in a carry-on, the battery comes out and the lighter sits in a protective case. If you are not sure which kind you own, leave it at home.

Matches are the simple light at the other end of the flight. One book of safety matches is the usual carry-on allowance. Strike-anywhere matches are not. Let the sulfur burn off before the match meets the cigar, the same as at home. Lighters 101 is how to choose a flame once you are allowed to have one.

If you are bringing cigars back

Pack them so they cannot be crushed, in the carry-on. Cuban cigars are still restricted when you bring them into the United States. A shop receipt from somewhere else does not change that. This shop does not ship a cigar to you at an airport, and it does not store a lighter while you fly.
